When Should You Book a Maternity Photo Shoot (And What to Wear)

There is something so quietly powerful about pregnancy. It is the way your body grows a whole world inside you without you even realising it sometimes. And before you know it, the days roll by, and you are already counting down to the due date. That is exactly why maternity photography exists... to press pause for a moment.
If you have been wondering when the right time is to book your maternity photo studio session and what to wear to feel beautiful and comfortable, let’s learn about this in detail.
The Right Time to Book Your Maternity Shoot
This bit is so important. Timing makes all the difference in how you feel during your shoot and how your bump looks in the photos.
Most mums-to-be book their shoot between 28 to 36 weeks. That is the sweet spot. Your bump is usually nice and round by then, and you still feel comfortable enough to move around a bit and enjoy the session.
Before 28 weeks, your bump might still be quite small. You might not get that lovely shape that shows off the glow of pregnancy.
After 36 weeks, it can get tricky. You might start to feel tired, your feet are probably swollen, and the last thing you want is to be standing for photos.
But of course every body is different. Some mums carry small and might want to wait a little longer. Others carrying multiples might prefer to book earlier, just in case.
If you are thinking about it now and wondering if it is too soon or too late, it is not. Just reach out and chat to your photographer. Most of us are happy to work around you.
What to Wear for Your Maternity Photos
Choosing the right outfit makes a big difference in how you feel during your shoot. You want to feel like yourself… just a bit more magical. Here are a few ideas to help you decide:
1. Go For Long, Flowy Dresses
These give such a soft, dreamy feel to the photos. They catch the light and move gently when you walk or twirl. Plus, they are super comfy and flattering.
2. Stick To Solid, Gentle Colours
Think creams, soft pinks, pale blues, earthy tones or even classic black. These shades bring out your natural glow and keep the focus on you and your bump.
3. Try Off-Shoulder Or Wrap Styles
These show just enough skin to feel elegant without being too much. They highlight your shape in a subtle, lovely way and photograph beautifully.
4. Fitted Dresses Work Well Too
If you want to show off every little curve of your bump, go for stretchy cotton or jersey dresses. They hug your shape and look great in close-up shots.
5. Show Your Bare Bump If You Feel Up For It
A bandeau top with a long skirt or some soft fabric draped around you can look so beautiful and personal. Only if it feels right for you, though.
6. Avoid Loud Patterns Or Logos
Bold prints or busy designs can be distracting. Keep it simple so the attention stays on you and that amazing bump.
7. Bring A Couple Of Options
Sometimes what looks good in your mirror does not feel the same on the day. It helps to have a second choice just in case.
8. Comfort Is Key
You will be moving a little during the session. Make sure whatever you choose lets you sit, stand and breathe without tugging or pulling.
